Warm Hubs Offer More Than Just Heat, Say Organisers

As winter bites and temperatures plummet across the UK, community hubs offering a warm refuge are proving more vital than ever. Take the Dorking Christian Centre, for instance, where a "Warm Welcome" initiative is now in its fourth year. This local effort is part of a wider Surrey County Council programme, encompassing over 80 venues designed to offer a free hot drink and a chance to connect with others during the colder months. Sue Jamieson, who helps run the Dorking centre, highlights this often-overlooked benefit. She explains that the opportunity for social interaction is "as important as being out of the cold," noting how the space has fostered a strong sense of community over the years. The motivation behind the Dorking centre stems from a core Christian belief in supporting those less fortunate. Observing queues of people waiting outside in the cold for the co-located Community Fridge service further solidified their resolve. This fridge, managed by Mid Surrey Community Fridges (MSCF), plays a crucial role in tackling food waste by distributing surplus food for a small donation. Historically, many individuals visiting the Community Fridge would also pop into the Warm Welcome space, creating a natural synergy between the two services. However, a significant change is on the horizon. MSCF plans to reduce its deliveries to Dorking from six times a week to just two. This shift, while intended to create capacity for new mobile stops in 2026 and align Dorking with other static hubs in areas like Goodwyns and Leatherhead, raises concerns. Ms Jamieson worries that the Warm Welcome space "won't be quite the same" without the consistent presence of the Community Fridge. For many, the combined offering of warmth, a hot drink, a cold buffet breakfast, and access to affordable food has been a vital support system, available Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 10:00 GMT.
