Third, as temporary offices, workshops or training rooms that can be delivered and made ready within days — and moved when a project finishes. There’s a strong financial logic. Containers can be bought as a long-term asset or hired monthly, giving firms neat options for budgeting. They deploy faster than building or leasing conventional space and move with the business when it expands or relocates. For mid-sized companies — a cohort predicted to add £745 billion to UK GVA and support 9.9 million jobs by 2028 — that flexibility can be a genuine competitive edge. Practical matters matter too. Modern units come with security features such as welded lock boxes and reinforced doors, and many operators can add CCTV. Choosing wind- and watertight or newly built containers helps protect sensitive stock, and firms should factor condition and insulation into decisions. Planning rules vary: storage on commercial land is often treated as temporary, but multiple units or conversions into offices can trigger permissions, so talk to local planning teams early. A small case in point: Jonathan Carrier, CEO of Allye, built an energy-storage prototype inside an 8ft used container he bought for about £800. He found it on Facebook Marketplace, says it’s easy to modify and secure, and highlights the need for an end-of-life recycling plan. Containers are no longer a stopgap.
