Forget the usual political sparring; a leading figure within Labour's intellectual heartland is urging the party to tackle "fantasy" solutions head-on, particularly from the Green Party. He also warns against the "populism" emerging from both the left and the right of the political spectrum.
Joe Dromey, general secretary of the Fabian Society, didn't mince words, describing Green Party leader Zack Polanski's proposals, especially a wealth tax on the super-rich, as offering voters "unicorns." He argues that such a levy, targeting just a tiny fraction of the population, simply won't generate the vast sums needed to fix the nation's finances or adequately fund essential public services.
Dromey, whose society is Labour's oldest think tank, sees a parallel between Polanski's "populism of the left" and Nigel Farage's "populism of the right." While their politics differ wildly, he contends both offer overly simplistic answers to complex national challenges, urging Labour to expose these easy fixes that "don't stand up to scrutiny."
The Fabian Society, a co-founder of the Labour Party back in 1884, has long been a key intellectual force. Dromey, himself from a prominent Labour family, acknowledges some "quietly radical" achievements under Keir Starmer's leadership, such as new laws on renters' and employment rights, which he believes shift power dynamics significantly.
However, Dromey suggests Labour needs a more robust approach in certain areas. He advocates for a stronger challenge to Reform UK on immigration, arguing the party must not only demonstrate competence but also highlight that Reform's views don't represent the broader British public. He also reflects on past fiscal choices, expressing regret over Labour's decision in opposition to match the previous government's National Insurance cuts, describing it as a "bear trap" that later pushed the party towards less ideal revenue-raising methods impacting businesses.
Perhaps his most passionate plea is for social care. Dromey highlights the "disgraceful" treatment of care workers, a large and vital part of our economy, who are routinely undervalued. While Labour has pledged £500m for a fair pay agreement, Fabian research indicates a much larger investment – potentially four times that amount – would be needed to bring care worker pay in line with the lowest NHS bands and truly address the sector's workforce crisis.
Ultimately, Dromey's message to Labour is clear: while promising change, the party must ground its solutions in reality, steering clear of "fantasy" fixes and directly confronting those who offer them, whether from the left or the right.
